What do you truly desire?

by Oana

In the series Lucifer, the hero has a superpower. He looks into someone’s eyes, asks “What do you truly desire?”, and the person immediately confesses their deepest desire. The trick is that the “victim” is not aware of that desire most of the time. Of course, the series is not a masterpiece, but the thing about not being aware of what we want is true. We run madly through life, we get physically exhausted and nervous, we chase some goals that satisfy us 5 minutes after we reach them, we are always dissatisfied and looking for something other than what we already have, we fear losing what we have without thinking too much if we really need what we have, we are constantly searching for something, or languishing in a lukewarm soup all our lives. How simple it would be for Lucifer to look into our eyes “What do you truly desire?”. Then we would no longer give silly answers like “to be happy”, “to be loved by Johnny”, “to have time to go on holiday”, “to have the neighbor’s goat die, because mine is also dying” or “to have time to rest more”.

Lucifer used people’s desires so he could manipulate them. Today’s world is full of lucifers. They not only know what people’s deepest desires are, they create those desires for them. Look around. “Don’t you want to be rich?”, “don’t you want to eat all this crap with no negative consequences?”, “don’t you want to be healthy without putting any effort into it? “… “aren’t you afraid?”. There is another series, and this is really a masterpiece, “House of cards”, in which the heroine says at one point “people love to be afraid” and we are given a lesson on how an entire country can be manipulated through fear. So real does the artificially created danger seem, that fearful people beg the manipulators to protect them and are happy to give up their rights to be ”protected” better.
